PSC Staff List

I've created a file, suitable for insertion into your Palmpilot's address book, which contains all of the staff and students at the PSC. It contains names, phone numbers, office numbers, and email addresses. I plan to update this file regularly (it is generated by a program so it is very little effort on my part).

To install the addresses from a Unix machine

With a Unix machine, you will install the addresses directly to your Palmpilot. These directions assume that /dev/pilot is a symlink to the serial device with your cradle.

  1. Install the pilot-link package on your unix workstation. If you have a depot-ized NetBSD computer, it's probably already in /usr/psc. You can test the installation by running:

    $ pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -l

    This should list the contents of your Palmpilot.

  2. Back up your Palmpilot. Try:

    $ mkdir ~/palm-backup
    $ pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -b ~/palm-backup

  3. Create the "PSC" category in the addressbook on your palm. Test this by starting the addressbook and clicking on the catagory list in the upper right corner. If "PSC" isn't there, then click "Edit Categories", click "NEW", enter PSC (all caps), press OK twice.

  4. Run the following command (it should all be on one line). If you don't have AFS on your computer, get /afs/psc.edu/usr/ksulliva/www/palm/secure/pscaddr.ecsv using scp then modify the command accordingly.

    $ pilot-addresses -p /dev/pilot -c PSC -d PSC -r /afs/psc.edu/usr/ksulliva/www/palm/secure/pscaddr.ecsv

Each time you re-do this, you will update the names on your Palmpilot; thus, you could do this every month or two to keep your Palmpilot up-to-date (I do). If you don't feel comfortable doing this, feel free to bring your Palmpilot to my office and I'll do it for you. It will take ~5 minutes for the backup, then about 1 minute for the name install.

To install the addresses from Windows machine

For a Windows machine, you will import the addresses into the Palm Desktop, which is the program which runs on your Windows computer and hotsyncs the Palmpilot. You must be running Palm Desktop 4.0 or later!, since you will be importing a vCard file. If you are running an older version, please download and install the latest version from www.palm.com.

  1. Download /afs/psc.edu/usr/ksulliva/www/palm/secure/pscaddr.vcf to your computer (or run the Windows AFS client).

  2. Start the Palm Desktop on your computer.

  3. Hotsync your Palmpilot, so that you have a recent backup.

  4. Click on the Address icon on the left (in Windows) to open up the addressbook. Make sure the "PSC" category exists and is chosen. Make sure the "PSC" category is empty. If it has any entries then delete them by choosing Edit->Select all, then choosing Edit->Delete. No need to archive them.

    Be careful! If you have anything but the PSC category selected, you may delete important addresses.

  5. Again, be sure that the "PSC" category is selected. Choose File->Import. Choose Files of type: vCard File. Select pscaddr.vcf (which you loaded in step 1) and press Open.

  6. Finally, Hotsync again. The addresses will be loaded onto your Palmpilot.
