Global Grid Forum

Usage Record
Working Group

Focus: In order for resources to be shared, sites must be able to exchange basic accounting and usage data in a common format. This working group proposes to define a common usage record based on those in current practice. The record format will be specific enough to facilitate information sharing among grid sites, yet general enough that the usage data can be used for a variety of purposes - traditional usage accounting, service usage monitoring, perfomance tuning, etc. This group will therefore be concentrating on collecting and disseminating resource consumption data. We will not be addressing how that data is to be collected by the resource sites, nor how it will be used by its recipients.

Charter (as approved by GFSG)
Concall and email discussions have led to the decision to pursue parallel paths to meet the needs of the grid community. Two documents are now under development. Version 1 is based on the original goals of the working group, to produce a recommendation that would take standard accounting into grid implementations. Version 2, based on the fundamental work completed in V1, will be more tailored to current grid computing environments and expectations.

This version addresses the open comments on the original document. It provides a foundation for early adopters of the specification.

Version 1 Consolidated Public Comments: [MSWord] [PDF]

This version presents a more streamlined schema, which incorporates much of the knowledged gained through experience and over time with respect to usage tracking in grid implementations.
